TSS Toxic Shock Syndrome

Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS) is a rare disorder, triggered by a bacterial infection, and is most commonly associated with the use of tampons, contraceptive sponges or diaphragms. However, TSS has also been known to occur in men, children and non menstruating women. TSS can occur after surgery, or because of a wound that may have allowed bacteria to enter the bloodstream.

Causes Of Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS)

TSS is caused by toxins produced by the Staphylococcus aureus (staph) bacteria or toxins produced by group A streptococcus (strep) bacteria. Symptoms for TSS can develop very suddenly, and this condition can be fatal.

Symptoms Of TSS

Common symptoms of Toxic Shock Syndrome include:

  • Sudden onset of a high fever
  • Low blood pressure (hypo-tension)
  • Vomiting, diarrhea
  • The appearance of a rash on your palms or the soles, which may peel in a few weeks
  • Redness of the eyes, mouth and throat
  • Headaches and muscle aches
  • Confusion
  • Seizures
